Cape Town — Global music star, Doja Cat, made Mzansi proud when she rocked a South African-themed dress during the Global Citizen Festival in New York.
The Global Citizen Festival made a comeback to New York’s Central Park this past weekend for a memorable day of music and action, and has been known for music, activism and global leadership, The South African reported.
More than 60 000 people attended the festival, which was hosted by Global Citizen Ambassador, Hugh Jackman. Doja Cat, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, is the daughter of Dumisanu Dlamini, a South African actor known for his role in Sarafina.
He married Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer in New York after the Sarafina cast toured New York. Doja Cat stayed with her mom in the US after her parents split and has since grown to enjoy great success in the music world.
Her performance at the Global Citizen Festival was incredible as she performed some of her greatest hits, but it was not her performance that had South Africans in awe, but rather he sequined South African-themed dress, paying homage to the country of her father’s homeland.
She also took the opportunity to address the humanitarian crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and Congo.
“It’s times like this it is important to remember that together we have the power to bring change, light and hope to those who need it most. I join forces with Global Citizen to help people in areas of conflict and I know so many of you will join me in taking action to earn your tickets to be here tonight,” she said.
“Please keep using your voice to help those fleeing violence to get the food, shelter and education they need and very much deserve. There is beauty in strength, in all of you watching this and choosing to be here tonight, this is our chance to put it into what matters most – life,” she added.
