Cape Town – South African artist Makhadzi has reportedly decided to start her own record label after she parted ways with her previous record label Open Mic Productions.
Initial reports suggested that in April 2023, she had fallen out of favour with Open Mic and she had made the decision to quit the label. She posted a statement announcing the end of the partnership on her Instagram page.
Makhadzi acknowledged that she was grateful for the opportunity to work with Open Mic and that both parties elevated the other within the music industry.
She said that it gave her the chance to travel the world and she was able to bag top awards including a South African Music Award (SAMA) and a Nickelode0n Kids’ Choice Award.
Makhadzi said she would now be moving on to focus on her own production company.
“I have taken a decision to not renew the contract with Open Mic Productions so I can focus on my own company Makhadzi Entertainment and other business ventures. We are all aware that the music career is very short, and I feel that it’s time I grew my own business and myself as an individual so that I can leave a legacy for my family and those who depend on me,” she said.

According to The South African, Open Mic responded to the news of Makhadzi’s departure, confirming that she was still under Open Mic management, despite contract issues.
“We will not be commenting on this issue as we are contractually bound by confidentiality provisions in the agreement entered into with our artist Makhadzi,” Open Mic Productions director Nkateko Maluleke said.
