Cape Town – Veteran radio and television personality Jeremy Mansfield is in mourning after his mother died on his birthday.
The radio legend took to his Facebook timeline to announce that his mother died at 05:00 on his birthday after his family had thrown him a surprise birthday party the previous day.
“Phew, a bit of a whirlwind birthday. Kari convinced my sister, brother-in-law and cousin Shante to fly from the EC and join us … for a surprise birthday party I knew nothing about. Party for about 100 … only to wake up this morning and find out on my real birthday that my mom had passed away at 5am.
“The sisters at the frail care centre said mom was a legend and they [used] to love hearing her voice coming down the passage with her walker. Up to her last days she knew how to bring a smile to everyone’s face. Rest in peace with your husband Pete and your two son’s Charlie and Steve,” Jeremy wrote.
Author Samantha Cowen, who is also Jeremy’s friend and former colleague, on Monday shared a picture of the radio legend in high spirits on her Facebook page, and wrote:
“Today is Jeremy’s birthday and he is 59, going on 6! This pic was taken on a good day, he is in his happy place, with his happy beer! He asked me to post this to let all of you know that he’s enjoying every minute he can.
“He’s on a lot of medication for pain but he still has a smile and a joke and a beer. I’ve made sure he’s seen all your messages and he is very grateful. Thank you so much for all the love you have for him and please keep the messages coming! They mean so very much.”
Messages of support recently flooded Jeremy’s Facebook page after he announced that his cancer had become terminal and was now only subject to palliative care.
Jeremy survived his battle with leukaemia after nine months of treatment, TimesLIVE, reported.
He revealed his liver cancer diagnosis in January this year.
