Cape Town – Renowned South African radio personality and DJ, Kid Fonque, has announced on his Twitter and Instagram that he will be hanging up his headphones and leaving his position at 5FM.
After doing Selective Styles for more than six years, the DJ felt it was finally the right time to hang up those Sunday evening headphones.
His last show took place on Sunday 11 December 2022.
“Today is the last #SelectiveStyles show on @5FM. Its been an incredible journey sharing all the music I love with you. I asked some of my homies to drop mixes today, so @JULLiAN_GOMES @NuttyNysMbelu @CharmeleonChina & @andileandyCA will join us. 6-9PM only on @5FM,” he tweeted.

The DJ wrote a long caption on Instagram, announcing his goodbye. He spoke about the journey, his experiences and what it meant to him.
“In the six years, I’ve been doing Selective Styles, we’ve done some incredible things. We have shone a huge spotlight on the South African underground music scene and tapped into the unheard gems from our global community.
“Selective Styles was home to the freshest cutting-edge cuts from the South African massive – FKA Mash, Sio, Gabbana, China Charmeleon, Jackson Brainwave, LaTique, SculpturedMusic, Nutty Nys, Vinny Da Vinci, Zito Mowa, Card On Spokes, EMAMKAY – and hundreds more.

“It also played host to the best international interviews and tracks from icons like Atjazz, Jimpster, Jazzanova, Children Of Zeus, Matthew Herbert, Emmavie, Rocco, Keinemusik … I could not be prouder of the guests, the tracklists, the vibe, and your reception every Sunday – it seriously made my soul sing.
“When taking on the Selective Styles task back then, I vowed to 5FM that I’d keep it real – me – and that may have partially inspired the name of the label that emerged alongside the show: Stay True Sounds.
“Now that label has become my baby – and one that needs serious attention. It’s time for me to hang up those Sunday eve headphones and pay it the respect it’s due. Staying True…
“I’d like to thank 5FM for their vision and all the artists who contributed, but mainly you, the listeners: Selective Styles would not have been anything without your support.
“The final show will be this Sunday 11 December 2022.
“Salut, Kid Fonque.”
