Cape Town – Media personality Phelo Bala took to his Facebook account on Thursday to wish himself a happy birthday and to detail how he has been grappling with depression.
Phelo was recently tabloid fodder when it was revealed that his marriage to his long-time partner Moshe Ndiki was in shambles.
According to IOL, Moshe confirmed the news of his separation from Phelo.
Phelo said that he wondered how he had made it thus far since his first diagnosis with severe depression as a 16-years-old teenager.
“So many times I thought I wouldn’t see another year. So many times I wished I didn’t. Living with severe depression since I was 16 and somehow I’m still standing and somehow fighting my way through this thing called life,” wrote Phelo.
He said that he was learning to love himself and learning to be more kinder to himself.
“I’m learning to love myself and be more kinder to myself. Though I have many reasons not to celebrate, I have so much more to be grateful for. I guess God is not through with me just yet. Happy 31st Birthday to me,” he said.
According to Times Live, Phelo once penned a sweet love note to his former husband on their first wedding anniversary, thanking him for sticking with him through thick and thin.
“Here’s to our first year anniversary of being together without the ons and off’s throughout the past six years. It has been quite a journey. We stuck it through. This is a pretty special day for me because you’re my first ever one year anniversary! It could have only been with you! That’s why I’m still with you and I chose you,” TimesLive quoted Phelo as saying at the time.
The pair have since been mum about their separation.
