Cape Town – South African music producer DJ Maphorisa has been released from custody after he was granted R4 000 bail following his arrest.
Maphorisa was arrested on Sunday evening after his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo claimed that he became aggressive with her after the two were scheduled to perform at a gig.
In a statement, Phongolo said: “On Sunday 2023/5/7 at about 12pm, I was at my place of residence with my boyfriend, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known as DJ Maphorisa. I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig.”
According to EWN, Maphorisa made his first appearance at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon after spending a night in police custody.
State prosecutor Collin Sono confirmed in court that Phongolo issued a withdrawal statement to drop the assault charges against Sekowe.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Phindi Mjonondwane said Maphorisa was charged with assualt and intent to cause bodily harm when he appeared in court, IOL reported.
However, the NPA said Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement before the court, the report said.
“Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement and was before court to which she agreed for the accused to be released on bail. The court set bail at an amount of R4 000,” Mjonondwane said.
However, the magistrate Clement Mukhodobyane told the accused that bail conditions would remain effective until charges were officially dropped.
The South African reported that Magistrate Clement Mukhodobwane said the bail condition was that the accused should not have direct or indirect communication with the complainant.
The case was postponed to 14 June for further investigation.
