Cape Town – South African award-winning poet Don Mattera, popularly known as Bra Zinga, has been admitted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital after suffering what appeared to be a stroke.
Bra Zinga’s foundation, Don Mattera Legacy Foundation issued a statement confirming the news.
“Iconic award winning South African poet, author, wordsmith, journalist, public speaker, anti-apartheid activist, peace crusader and raconteur Dr. Donato Francisco Mattera, better known as Bra “Don” Mattera has been hospitalised. He was admitted to The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Saturday. It appears that he may have had a slight stroke but it is yet to be confirmed by the physicians.”

“The Don Mattera Legacy Foundation who is entrusted with the protection of Don Mattera’s legacy, will update the public on his recovery and has called on South Africans to keep Don and his family in their prayers and dua’s,” read the statement.
His son Dr Teddy Mattera said his father remained in a stable condition.
“My dad had limited use of his arms and we immediately decided to admit him to hospital. He is in a stable condition, in good spirits and receiving the necessary treatment as prescribed by the medical staff.”
According to The Citizen, Bra Zinga was a political activist during the apartheid era.
He was part of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL).
From 1973 to 1982 he was banned from political activities and was placed on house arrest by the apartheid government.
In his lifetime, he has written poetry, plays and children’s stories. He also became a journalist for multiple publications, including Sunday Times.
