Cape Town – Mozambique’s celebrated actress, producer, and director Hermelinda Simela has died after giving birth in a hospital, reports say.
The award-winning artist died on Friday, August 13, as she received treatment for post-delivery complications.
She was 38.
According to BBC News, Simela’s new-born baby girl is in good health.
The news of her passing has shocked many artists, the report says.

“The country has lost a strong, resilient woman, an exemplary mother and, above all, an engine of our dreams.
“Hermelinda encouraged theatre people and created opportunities for actors to succeed,” the report quoted Alvim Cossa, a long-time colleague and friend of Simela as saying.
According to Tuko, the veteran artist showcased her talents in different countries such as Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil, India and Germany.
Simela scooped best supporting actress at the 2013 Africa Movie Academy Awards for her Virgin Margarida role, said Sunday Times.
