Cape Town – Critically-acclaimed actress and budding author, Ayanda Borotho is one who never shies away from addressing the big elephant in the room.
She took to Instagram recently to address matters relating to the culmination of “dysfunctional” families and the pre-text behind all of that.
“Over this past weekend we honoured our two uncles, one who passed away in exile, and one who was an MK (Umkhonto Wesizwe) and disappeared in the late 80s. We never found his remains. I was reminded of the sacredness of family and the pivotal role each member has to contribute to the wellbeing and progress of the family structure as each of us pulled together to make this ‘funeral’ a success,” she wrote.

Ayanda is often known on social media for addressing social issues that affect the growth of society and how important it often is for one to take care of their own mental health first before they carry the next person’s yoke.
“I just wanted to remind you of this: A functional family is the backbone of a thriving society. When a society is broken, it means our families are broken. It is a universal law,” she said.
Ayanda said that the apartheid system robbed the society of its functionality and that it played a big role in ripping families apart.
“The apartheid system robbed us of so much but none as unforgivable as ripping our African families apart. Claim back your families. Let us not normalise broken families. Let us normalise healthy, thriving and supportive families,” said Ayanda.
