Cape Town – EFF leader Julius Malema has warned of a complete electricity grid collapse, saying that the government has failed to put practical and implementable solutions to address the ongoing electricity blackouts.
Malema addressed the media on Monday, following the EFF’s central command team (CCT) meeting, which took place over the weekend.
“In the next two weeks, we have been warned, there is going to be darkness. We are almost at a point of grid collapse. It’s a reality that South Africans must know that we are heading for darkness and ANC politicians are continuing business as usual, as if we are not in a crisis.
“We are in a deep, deep, deep crisis – cell phone networks won’t work, water, even if we have it, we won’t receive it because it needs electricity. Nothing will function.
“We are heading for disaster, worse than what Covid was. No one will go to work. The dead will have to be buried the day because they won’t be fridges to keep them… even those with generators will not be saved from the mess we are going into,” said Malema.

Malema said that Eskom must be moved to the Department of Energy.
“Let Eskom be under one political leadership, and political authority so that they know they have no option, but to take this political direction.
“So we don’t support the minister of electricity. He must go.
“He is being paid a lot of money that we do not have. Government needs every little cent that we are wasting on Sputla, who is not going to help us with anything,” said Malema.

The EFF leader called for the return of former Eskom executives, Brian Molefe and Matshela Koko, who he believed were being “unfairly and irrationally persecuted in the name of so-called state capture”.
“Brian (Molefe) and (Matshela) Koko must come back. So must all those Indian, Coloured and White engineers must come rescue South Africa.
“We are heading for a crisis, and here is a man who can help us. All these guys must come back and put their heads together to save South Africa. There is no time for profit-making. I am not saying anyone’s charges must be dropped. Continue with it, but we have a problem.
“The man has got a skill. He has the capacity and the ability to take rational decisions in the best interest of the country. Can’t we humble ourselves and go ask him for help?” Malema said in reference to Molefe.

Molefe was arrested last year in connection to state capture and is currently out on R50 000 bail.
Koko was also granted R300 000 bail last October, following his arrest in connection to a multibillion-rand contract Eskom entered into with a Swiss engineering company.
