A proposed US$18.5 billion smart city development in the Nigerian capital of Abuja has the potential to provide accommodation for around 140 000 people and employ as many as 250 000.
As reported by Construction Review Online, the Abuja Centenary City project is expected to include 260 luxury villas; 256 apartment buildings; 13 waterfront retail areas, 139 office buildings; and 313 697m2 of hotel suites and serviced apartments. Meanwhile, towers will also be built to host libraries and archives commemorating the country’s former presidents.
According to developer and stakeholder Alhaji Alhassan Dantata, the towers will span more than 100m in height, and will also comprise office space.
While the development was announced four years ago, during Nigeria’s centennial celebrations, the project has been dogged by political and financial complications. Construction, however, is expected to commence shortly.
