Cape Town – A police officer was arrested for defeating the ends of justice after trying to book out Zimbabwean businessman Frank Buyanga from prison.
According to News24, Buyanga is accused of kidnapping his next of kin in his home country in 2020.
The report said Buyanga who is wanted in Zimbabwe for kidnapping, robbery and contempt of court was refused bail in December when more charges came to light.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the 34-year-old detective constable allegedly wanted to book out the accused from the Johannesburg Correctional Services, purporting that he was going to do an investigation.
Buyanga was charged on 28 November 2022 and subsequently refused bail as he was also wanted for kidnapping in his country of origin, said Mogale

“It is alleged on Friday, April 14, the investigation officer received a call from Johannesburg Correctional Services notifying him that another police officer, a constable, wants to book out the accused (Buyanga) for investigation.
“The Investigating Officer immediately requested the prison warders to delay him as he and his colleagues are on their way,” Mogale said.
Mogale said upon arrival, the constable from Mondeor detectives was questioned.
“It was discovered that he had no case connected to the accused,” said Mogale.
The detective constable is expected in court soon.
