Rwanda’s largest inland cargo facility will soon be open for business.
With the installation of machinery and equipment well under way at the US$35-million facility in Masaka, Kigali, it’s expected to be completed by year end, according to a Dubai Ports World (DPW) Group report. This after DPW signed a 25-year concession in 2016 to develop and operate the new regional trade logistics hub.
The acquisition of construction and operational permits delayed the previous completion date of July this year, DPW Logistics Rwanda CEO Sumeet Bhardwaj told the New York Times.
The facility is expected to improve efficiency and reduce logistics cost by using modern machinery. The cargo hub, built on 90 000 m², will feature a 12 000 m² container yard, as well as a 19 600 m² bonded warehouse. With an annual capacity of 50 000 TEUs and 640 000 tons of warehousing space, Bhardwaj says the facility will also reduce waiting times and the associated high costs by enabling truckers and clients to operate quickly and efficiently.
