Cape Town – Just days before schools reopen for 2023, MC Weiler Primary School in Alexandra, Gauteng, was reportedly burgled and damaged earlier this week.
Reports indicated that a group of people broke into the school, ransacked a few classrooms and stole food and learning material before fleeing.
According to a social media user who posted pictures of the incident on Twitter, stationery, computers, food and the school bus tyres were stolen.
Gauteng education department, Steve Mabona said this was concerning, as schools were preparing to open next week, reported News24.
“To this end, a lot of maintenance work and repairs need to be done. The burglary was reported to the police. This is concerning, as schools are preparing to open for the academic year on 11 January,” Mabona was quoted saying in the report.

He said the suspects broke burglar guards to gain access to the school’s kitchen, where food for the start of Term 1 was stolen, together with a microwave and kitchen utensils.
In a separate incident, a 38-year-old foreign national is under police guard in hospital after he was caught with seven government computers stolen from Yedwa Primary School in Msogwaba, Pienaar.
The suspect allegedly got injured when he tried to escape from lawful custody, police said in a statement.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, a team of investigators worked closely with other security clusters after a case of business burglary was registered with the Pienaar SAPS recently.
Seven computers and a speaker allegedly stolen during the burglary were found when the suspect was tracked down to a house in Moyeni, Msogwaba, said Mohlala.
“The suspect allegedly tried to escape from lawful custody, resulting in him sustaining injuries. He is under police guard in hospital.” said Mohlala.
