SA head of diplomacy Clayson Monyela exposes ‘underperforming government colleagues’

Cape Town – Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) head of diplomacy, Clayson Monyela, is using Twitter to name and shame underperforming government department officials and municipalities.

This is shortly after Monyela warned those he referred to as colleagues in the government sphere that he would be using his Twitter timeline to “remind fish to swim”.

“My colleagues in Gov (all 3 spheres) better be ready. My TL will be used to remind fish to swim. Be ready to be tagged on vids/pics in your area of influence till you swim. Let’s get this country working. #SouthAfrica is worth fighting for. My Twitter friends will help. Let’s!,” he wrote in a tweet.

The tweet was more than welcome by his close to 200 000 followers, including politicians such as One SA’s Mmusi Maimane who vowed to monitor and support Monyela’s initiative.

Using the social media platform, Monyela said he planned to hold government officials accountable following his recent travel to provinces over the holiday season.

“I observed that public infrastructure is not being maintained, and this is in terms of the basics. What do these people do? These councillors, mayors, municipal managers, premiers, ministers; because they live in these places, they drive on these roads.

“Being part of the system I know there is a budget for maintenance. There are people whose day-to-day job is to fix potholes, an inquiry about non-availability of water — this is what they are supposed to do daily, but it’s not being done,” he wrote in one tweet.

So far his followers have come to the party and tagged Monyela on a number of pictures and videos showing lack of service delivery in various parts of the country.

In turn, Monyela has tagged responsible municipalities and officials for their urgent attention, resulting in the issues being sorted in a short space of time.
