Cape Town – Kwaito and Gqom musician Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo’s family has reportedly rubbished claims that his wife, Babes Wodumo, found out about his death through social media.
Mampintsha died in hospital on Christmas Eve after suffering a stroke.
He was 40.
He left behind his Gqom superstar wife, Babes Wodumo and their son, Sponge.
A report by Newzroom Afrika indicated that Mampintsha’s family was fuming after Babes Wodumo only found out on social media that her husband had passed away.
The report said that a nurse at the hospital where he had been admitted apparently broke the news to certain people without informing the family first.

“She [Babes] said everything looked well. They thought that he will be discharged on the 24th [of December] the day he passed, but unfortunately, she woke up in the morning to social media…. people saying that he had passed. The family said one of the nurses in the wards where he was staying is the one that broke the news to certain people, and that is how word got out. The family is very unpleased with this because that’s how unfortunately his wife also had to find out through social media…A very distraught Babes couldn’t even contain herself because of the way she found out,” it was reported.
But according to IOL, family spokesperson Zandile Maphumulo denied the report and said: “… both families were there at the time of his passing. We don’t want to entertain external forces or news that we don’t understand.”
Babes Wodumo’s father, Mbongeni Welcome Simelani, reportedly concurred, saying: “Mandla fell seriously ill on December 15, and the family decided to take him to the King Edward hospital. He was later transferred to Durdoc Hospital, where he passed on Saturday, December 24.

“Mandla took his last breath at 6am at the hospital, surrounded by his family.”
Meanwhile, Mampintsha’s father Thembinkosi Maphulo thanked the public for the support they received since the news of his son’s passing broke last weekend.
“Mampintsha, my only son, was a blessing from God. It was also a great blessing for my son to be well-known for his musical talent. As the family, we are grateful for the support we have received thus far,” the report quoted the father as saying.
In an interview with SABC News, the family confirmed that the memorial service will take place on Thursday, December 29 and the funeral will follow on Friday 30 December in Durban.
