Cape Town – A Mpumalanga woman was shot dead when two armed suspects ambushed and robbed a group of women who had gathered to share their stokvel money.
The suspects allegedly held the group of women hostage before robbing them of an undisclosed amount of money, police said in a statement.
A man and a woman both aged 23 have since been in connection with the murder and robbery that occurred on Saturday, December 10.
“Two armed suspects are said to have suddenly showed up in the house where they (the stokvel women) had gathered. A 30-year-old woman was fatally shot during the incident which took place on Saturday, December 10, 2022 just before midday at Dingindoda Section in Mshatsa, near Masoyi, outside White River,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.
According to the report, after three women were given their share and left, two armed men entered the house.

“They allegedly held the women hostage and robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash. It is further indicated that when they (suspects) were leaving, one suspect shot at the woman who was later certified dead on arrival in hospital,” Mohlala said.
A case of robbery with an additional charge of murder was opened and investigations led to the arrests.
The suspects were expected to appear at the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, December, 14.
Police believed that the suspects orchestrated the robbery and knew about the stokvel meeting beforehand, Mohlala said.
Police expected to make more arrests, as the investigation unfolded.
Earlier this week, reports said that stokvel members were accosted by two armed suspects and robbed of R60 000-00 cash on Saturday.
Provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe warned community members and business owners, not to carry large amounts of money advised them to make use of electronic funds transfer (EFT) to limit robberies.
