Cape Town– Former ANC Women’s League leader Bathabile Dlamini reportedly intends to take legal action against her disqualification from running for the party’s national executive committee (NEC) at the upcoming elective conference.
Dlamini was barred from nominations as ANC NEC member after the NEC’s nominee vetting process revealed she had been convicted of “a serious crime”, reported the Mail and Guardian.
Earlier this year a court ruling found Dlamini guilty of perjury for lying under oath during a 2017 inquiry into the social grants debacle at the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).
“To be specific, you are summarily disqualified as a candidate for all NEC positions, including additional members during the 55th national conference,” electoral committee chair Kgalema Motlanthe wrote in a letter leaked to the media, according to Mail and Guardian.

Dlamini’s lawyer Tim Sukazi said the former minister had noted receipt of the disqualification notice and had indicated her decision to take legal action, reported TimesLIVE.
“We advise that our client refutes the contents of your letter. To this end, our client intends to institute legal proceedings against yourselves in pursuance of its rights in law,” the report quoted a letter issued by Sukazi.
The report said Dlamini was one of the leading runners for NEC positions, making it to number 15 on the list released by the committee last week, having received 856 branch nominations.
Although Dlamini was the first casualty, the report indicated that the vetting process was expected to eliminate a number of other ANC leaders.
