Cape Town – A Limpopo man has his eyes set on a provincial government ‘transport tender’ with his donkey cart project.
The man, who goes by the name Djo BaNkuna, said he was prepared for the tender with his factory producing eight-seater carts.
In a Facebook post, BaNkuna said he heard Limpopo transport and community safety MEC Florence Radzilani was launching a donkey cart project in Giyani, Tshakhuma and Namakgale.
He declared his readiness, saying that his “factory was running full steam”, producing a variety of seater donkey carts.
“I am ready for the tender. My factory in Nkowankowa is running full steam. We are producing 2,4,6 and 8 sitter donkey carts,” he wrote on the post, adding that the carts were “ISO 2024 certified”, with SPCA-compliant donkeys in the country.
“We are producing two-, four-, six- and eight-seater donkey carts. We are busy installing soft seats, lights and sound systems. I have already ordered seat belts from Alibaba.
“My farm in Gravelotte is well stocked with the freshest SPCA-compliant donkeys in Mzansi, as you may see. Comrades, I am taking this tender. Our people deserve the best,” he said, referring to pictures of donkeys he shared.
This comes after the controversial R780 000 North West donkey tender which was described as “highly overpriced” and “dodgy” by opposing political parties, as reported by TimesLIVE.
The DA called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently instruct the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate the project, saying it was dodgy and highly overpriced.
“Not only does this donation smack of brazen corruption, it also is a clear indication of the ANC’s disregard for the needs and dignity of these residents,” the DA was quoted as saying in the report.
ActionSA, on the other hand, said it was embarrassing that Community safety MEC Sello Lehari chose to issue a tender to buy donkey carts for residents instead of fixing roads and infrastructure that have been problems in rural communities.
The party alleged that the donation was a clear example that the “ANC government has no plan nor will to change people’s lives”, the report said.
