Cape Town – Sanctioned Russian tycoon Alexey Mordashov’s $500 million (about R9.1 billion) superyacht is reportedly on its way to South Africa.
Mordashov is Russia’s third richest man.
His mega yacht is expected to arrive in Cape Town in November, reports said.
Due to the size of the yacht, reports indicated it may dock at the V&A Waterfront.
The 142m Nord departed for South Africa from Hong Kong on Thursday, reported TimesLIVE.
The report said that the luxury yacht was on Friday morning southeast of Hainan Island after sailing into Hong Kong two weeks ago.
According to vessel data compiled by Bloomberg, the Nord docked in Vladivostok before Hong Kong and is expected to arrive in Cape Town on November 9, the report said.
The report said the European Union, UK and US sanctioned Mordashov, who is the biggest shareholder in steemaker Severstal PJSC, after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The US and European governments have allegedly seized more than a dozen yachts linked to sanctioned Russians, reported Business Insider SA.
The report said although South Africa hasn’t imposed sanctions on Russians, it’s not clear where the yacht would dock upon its arrival.
However, yachts of that size usually head for the V&A Waterfront.
According to Mordashov’s spokesperson, the billionaire has been in Moscow since the Nord’s arrival in Hong Kong and declined to comment on the vessel’s movements.
