Cape Town – An investigation into the syndicate dealing in money laundering and counterfeit reportedly led to the arrest of a motorist and the discovery of R3.5 million fake money in Pretoria central on Friday.
This was after the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officers spotted a suspicious convoy, including a red Range Rover, two Mercedes Benz cars and a Toyota, a report said.
“The operation was conducted following a syndicate dealing in money laundering and counterfeit money. During the operation, the officers were following a convoy of suspicious vehicles comprising of a red Range Rover, two Mercedes Benz had a Toyota Corolla,” IOL quoted TMPD spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba as saying.
At Arcadia street, the officers intercepted and searched the Range Rover and a fake R100 note was found.

When the driver was further questioned he led the officers to a stash of more counterfeit money located at premises at Stanza Bopape Street, reported The Citizen.
“At the premises, a steel box full of counterfeit money was discovered along with chemicals used to clean the money. The counterfeit money found amounts to more than R3.5-million. The officers also discovered that the name of the suspect matches the suspect who was sought for money laundering,” the report quoted Mahamba as saying.
The suspect was arrested for possession of counterfeit banknotes and will appear in court soon.
