Cape Town – Five suspected robbers were reportedly killed following a high-speed chase and shootout with the police and private security personnel on the N2 KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.
Reports said a group of eight men in two vehicles held up a security guard at a mall in Empangeni before breaking into one of the shops and fleeing with clothing and other items.
“They held up the security guard and broke into a shop at the mall and stole clothing and other items before fleeing the scene. A security company in the area was notified and immediately alerted all other role players to indicate that the vehicles were travelling towards Durban,” Times Live reported.

Shortly afterwards, private security personnel and the police gave chase and a shootout occurred.
Five of the suspects died, two were wounded and one was arrested as he tried to flee the scene, reported News24.
This was after both vehicles lost control and overturned along the N2 freeway near the King Shaka International Airport, the report said.
“The suspects will be profiled to establish if they are linked to other crimes in the province,” the report quoted police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker as saying.

They were charged with armed robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firms and ammunition.
