Cape Town – An Eastern Cape family is grieving the loss of a father and two of his children after a fire broke at their Hunt Street family home in Aliwal North on Friday
The 40-year-old father and his 12-year-old son died at the scene while his two-year-old daughter succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, police said in aMaletswai police were called to the fire in the early hours of Friday, said police spokesperson Captain Ursula Roelofse.
“On arrival, members had to make means to get over a devil’s fork fence and break windows to try and get into the house that was well secured with burglar proofing. Members of the fire brigade were also informed,” said Roelofse.

Police managed to save the mother, daughter and a nanny.
“The mother, the nanny, a son and two daughters were rescued but the father was trapped in the house. He and his 12-year-old son succumbed to injuries on the scene. A two-year-old girl died on arrival at the hospital. The mother, nanny and a daughter managed to survive,” said Roelofse.
The cause of the fire was still unknown and police had since opened an inquest docket.
Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Asogran Naidoo commended constables Siyabonga Tabane and Florince Nwabisa, who responded to the fire, for their bravery and dedication.
