Cape Town – In celebration of the popular American cartoon character, SpongeBob SquarePants’ 36th birthday, DStv channel Nickelodeon aired the first ever isiZulu SpongeBob SquarePants episode on Thursday, July 14.
According to The Citizen, the show follows the adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants, a yellow sea sponge who lives in the Pacific Ocean in a place called Bikini Bottom, where he frequently goes on various escapades with his friends
The show was first aired in 1999. However, according to the show, SpongeBob SquarePants was born on July 14, 1986.

Channel24 reported that the show’s first isiZulu episode was not only dedicated to celebrating SpongeBob’s 36th birthday but to teaching and celebrating isiZulu as one of the 11 official languages in the SA.
“This is one of the many steps we are taking in our commitment to being more inclusive and more localised while celebrating Africa’s rich and colourful heritage and local languages,” Nickelodeon Africa senior vice-president Dillon Khan said as quoted by the report.
