Cape Town – Sergeant Johan Andries van Rooyen, 51, of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), reportedly died on Saturday while on deployment in Mozambique.
In a statement, SANDF spokesperson Brigadier-General Andries Mahapa said Van Rooyen was part of Operation Vikela, South Africa’s contribution to the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).
Van Rooyen complained of severe headache and chest complications at Mihluri base.

He was taken to Level 2 hospital in Pemba where he succumbed.
“Staff Sergeant Van Rooyen was from 2 Field Engineer Regiment in Kroonstad.
“His mortal remains will be repatriated to South Africa where the SANDF and his family will finalise funeral arrangements,” said Mahapa.
