Cape Town – A one-year-old child from Pienaar, Mpumalanga, was reportedly shot and wounded when a stray bullet from a local grave site struck her in the leg on Saturday.
According to IOL, the child was playing outside her home at the time of the incident.
“Gunshot sounds were reportedly heard coming from the nearby graveyard where there was a burial and moments later the child was heard screaming. When her mother rushed outside to find out what was happening to her daughter, she noticed that the baby was bleeding on her lower body,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli as quoted by the report.
The child was transported to a nearby clinic in a private vehicle and medical personnel confirmed that she had been shot in the leg.
She was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

News24 reported that the hospital’s counterparts notified the police of the incident.
A murder attempt case was opened and a manhunt for the perpetrators of the shooting was launched.
Police urged anyone with information that could help identify the suspects to contact their local police station.
“South Africa is governed by laws and a situation whereby firearms are misused at funerals, thereby placing the lives of innocent citizens at risk can never be allowed,” Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela quoted as saying by the report.
