Cape Town – South African businesswoman and socialite Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize has responded to the backlash she received on Twitter after donating houses to flood victims in Wyebank, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.
MaMkhize took to social media with pride to share some of the moments captured during the house handover, as well as some candid words about the importance of giving back to those in need.
“Today was a great day! I spent the morning together with eThekwini Municipality in Wyebank to hand over three houses that we, as Zikhulise Group and ROYALAM donated to families that were severely affected by the floods in April.
“While there is more that needs to be done to rebuild KZN, it is important to highlight the progress and celebrate the small wins. Thank you to eThekwini Municipality for the quick implementation of land, water and electricity in response to the flood victims,” wrote MaMkhize in an Instagram post.

However, it wasn’t long before MaMkhize faced backlash from Twitter users after one of the homes donated to flood victims in KZN was mistaken for one she donated.
The widely circulated photos showed the inside of the home, which has a single bed and a shower. Tweeps slammed the home, with many saying it resembled a maximum-security prison.

MaMkhize took to Instagram and shared a video of herself responding to the backlash and said that the houses she donated were built using alternative technology, not bricks.

“Fellow South Africans, I must say, I’m very very disappointed. I woke up this morning, my team is bringing me that ‘I’ve built a house with bricks’. Number one, I didn’t build a house with bricks. The house that I’ve done was done out of alternative technology. Number two, guys instead of just talking, stand up and do something. Everybody knew that there were floods in KZN… Instead of encouraging other people that want to help you’re discouraging the people that are helping,” said MaMkhize.
