What comprises 32 680 photovoltaic panels and can generate clean, low-carbon, sustainable electricity to 40 000 homes, schools and businesses? East Africa’s largest solar plant, that’s what.
Developed under the Global Energy Transfer Feed-in Tariff, a support scheme for renewable energy projects managed by Germany’s KfW Development Bank, in partnership with Uganda’s Electricity Regulatory Agency, the 10 MW facility was inaugurated in the Ugandan town of Soroti and is also the country’s first grid-connected solar plant.
According to a Biztech Africa report, the US$19 million solar plant has the potential to increase the East African country’s net output capacity by a further 20 MW of solar energy, and is partly funded by the governments of Norway, Germany, the UK and EU.
