Cape Town – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has lauded the appointment of General Fannie Masemola as South Africa’s new police commisioner, and expressed its confidence in his ability to fight crime in the country.
Masemola was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday.
In a statement on Friday, the EFF said that Masemola played a pivotal role in the ushering of peace in KwaZulu Natal after the country’s 1994 democratic transition.
The party also said: General Masemola, as someone who has been lauded for reducing the rate of cash-in-transit heist in 2016, the EFF expects the commissioner to deal with this spite of violent crime decisively.”

The EFF said, however, that for Masemola to execute his duties effectively, there was need for him to “ignore the self-obsessed meddling of minister of police Bheki Cele, who will undoubtedly seek to impose his will on the commissioner and undermine his administrative authority”.
“As such, the EFF calls on the newly appointed commissioner to fiercely resist the disruptive influence of Bheki Cele and focus on the task at hand, which is drastically reducing crime and ensuring perpetrators fear the arm of the law in South Africa.”
The party said that it must be during Masemopla’s tenure as commissioner that the gang wars in the Cape Flats in the Western Cape must come to an end.
“The EFF is hopeful that this will be a new chapter in the fight to combat criminal activities in South Africa, and that our streets will no longer be places of crippling fear and injustice,” said the party.
