Cape Town – They captured South Africa’s hearts by storm after Hector Mkansi proposed to his long-time girlfriend Nonhlanhla at a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) franchise in Vaal in 2019.
The proposal which landed on Twitter’s trending list afforded them the wedding of their dreams, as prominent companies like Coca Cola, Audi and internationally-acclaimed artists like Black Coffee, offered to sponsor their special day.
The very same KFC they were at offered assistance and started a #StreetWiseWedding.
According to Drum the couple is still going strong and still very much head over heels with each other.

They recently celebrated their second anniversary.
“Yes, we thought our lives would be way different but we went back to our RDP house in the Vaal. The amount that we got in total was R150 000 and that amount came in bits and pieces but we managed to fix out RDP house and security for us to be safe since people think we have money,” the report quoted the couple as saying.
The unemployed Vaal two had to go back to their normal lives after grabbing international headlines with their KFC proposal.
The New York Post reported that the wedding was actually the couple’s second set of nuptials. Two years after meeting at a funeral in 2010, they held a small ceremony in 2012, but Hector felt his wife deserved better when he proposed again at the fast food outlet, not knowing that it would be caught on camera.
KFC posted a video of the trending wedding at the time on their Twitter page with the #KFCWedding #KFCProposal.

“In 2011 our families began lobola negotiations and in 2012 we got married in a small traditional ceremony as that was all we could afford at the time… We had the ceremony but I knew this wasn’t what my wife and I wanted,” CNN quoted Hector as he said.
Hector’s silent prayers were answered at the most unexpected setting. Designers came forth to design the wedding dress, established wedding planners landed a hand, KFC offered catering for their special ceremony and many more well-to-do companies.
“We have no words to express how grateful we are, and we thank everyone who honoured their pledges…We are doing this thing for life…Some of the gifts are still rolling in,” the couple told Drum.
