WATCH | Officer insists on testing motorist with used breathalyser tube

Cape Town – The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has launched an internal investigation following a widely shared video of one of their officers trying to conduct a breathalyser test on a driver with an already used device.

In the widely shared video that was taken by the motorist’s wife, the driver and the officer can be heard having an argument over a used breathalyser device.

Apparently, the officer blew into the breathalyser tube, then insisted that the motorist should also blow.

However, the driver refused.

“You blow in this and then you want me to blow in it?,” the driver asked the officer.

“Yes, it’s how it works,” the officer responded.

The driver further asked the officer to open a new breathalyser tube but he (officer) refused.

At one point the officer could be heard saying: “We can’t have a hundred breathalysers for each person”.

According to IOL, JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar commented on the matter, saying a probe into the officer’s behaviour had since been launched.

“The officer’s behaviour is not professional and his conduct is unbecoming, by him putting his head into the couple’s car window without he himself not wearing a mask. His reflective jacket was not tied and he did not behave in a manner which is befitting to the law enforcement profession,” the report quoted Minnaar as saying.
