What do South Africa, Tunisia and Botswana have in common? They’re Africa’s most promising breeding grounds for entrepreneurs.
According to a This Is Africa report, analysis of the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Index shows that the cost of registering a business in South Africa dropped from US$355 in 2010 to just US$21 in 2015, thanks to a simplified administrative process. What’s more, the nation also takes top spot on the continent in terms of the latest technologies.
Tunisia performed well too. Its advantage is the quality of maths and science education available (ranking third in the region for 2015/16), while access to finance has also been enhanced.
Botswana has also seen improvement. The number of new firms increased by nearly 10% per year between 2009 and 2014, resulting in Africa’s highest new business density, with 13.11 new registrations per 1 000 adults. The Southern African nation has also ranked in the top four destinations to do business in the continent since 2009.
