Cape Town – Eight people believed to be prophets reportedly drowned in Zimbabwe recently during a religious ceremony in the southern African country’s Mashonaland Central province.
Reports indicated that the incident happened while the prophets, including two brothers, attempted to retrieve a “holy stick” from a flooded river.
The state-owned Herald newspaper, quoted Mashonaland Central provincial development coordinator, Timothy Tigere as saying that the leader of the church, was on a mission to select a baptist from a pool of prophets. He threw a rod into the river and told the prophets that whoever retrieved the rod would become the new baptist.
Eleven men were said to have jumped into the river, leading to the drowning of the eight.
A ZWNews report said that the Zimbabwean government provided a coffin, blanket, transport and food for each of the bereaved families.
