Cape Town – Several taxis were set alight, causing pandemonium on Von Weilligh and Commissioner streets in Johannesburg on Saturday morning.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Wayne Minaar confirmed that routes were closed following taxi violence that erupted between two rival associations in the area.

“Four taxis were torched and burned out. There are few other taxis damaged like broken windscreens and windows smashed out. Fortunately the fire has been extinguished as the fire department is already on the scene.

“There is a conflict between two associations which started this fight. We will investigate to establish what caused the conflict.

“One person, a taxi driver was injured and had to be taken to hospital. No other injuries of serious nature were reported. The situation is under control with a strong police visibility on the scene. No arrest made yet,” Minaar said.
He urged motorists to use alternative routes.
