Zanzou nightclub case: Gruesome crime, but bail granted – magistrate explains why

Johannesburg – The magistrate who approved bail for the accused in the Zanzou nightclub assault case stated that the accused had demonstrated it was in the interest of justice to grant his release.

The accused, who remains unnamed due to ongoing identity parades, arrested in March after videos surfaced showing young men being sexually violated by bouncers at the club.

According to reports, despite the severity of the allegations, Magistrate Ernest Mbembele ruled that the accused had demonstrated that his release was in the interest of justice, citing his financial responsibility towards his wife and children.

“His factors outweigh the fact that the offence is very gruesome, the risk of abscondment, the strength of the State’s case and the fact that he fears for his life. It is my view that the accused managed to prove on a balance of probabilities that it is in the interest of justice that he be released on bail,” EWN quoted Mbembele as saying.
The accused will be released upon paying bail and is expected back in court in May.
