At their land reclamation day rally in Sophiatown on Sunday, the EFF marked the anniversary of Dutch colonizer Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival in South Africa over 300 years ago.
“When you celebrate the land, you must do so, knowing very well that the children of Palestine are losing their land as we speak, Palestinians are being killed as we speak. The ceasefire is not being respected by Donald Trump and Netanyahu. The reason why we support Palestine is because Sophiatown was like Palestine at some point,” Malema said.
His comments came amid reports of continued violence in Gaza and the West Bank, despite international calls for a ceasefire.
Malema, a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, has consistently called for South Africa to sever diplomatic ties with Israel and impose economic sanctions.
The country recently took Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of committing genocide in Gaza. The case, which is still under review, has heightened diplomatic tensions.
