Cape Town – Political analyst Moeletsi Mbeki has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa, describing him as a “very weak president”.
Speaking during an interview with author and broadcaster Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, Mbeki argued that Ramaphosa has struggled to control both his party, the ANC, and his Cabinet, citing instances where ministers, like Gwede Mantashe, contradict government policies without consequence.
“I think President Ramaphosa has been a very weak president for the ANC. He’s not been able, first to control his own party, he’s not really controlling the ANC. He’s not controlling his Cabinet, which is why, you know, ministers say all sorts of things.

“Gwede Mantashe (Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy) says one thing, the government decides we have to do something about green energy he says, no, he’s going to keep burning coal, and he’s still a minister, despite contradicting what the government is saying,” Mbeki said.
Mantashe also reaffirmed that coal would remain a crucial component of the country’s energy strategy as developed nations explore technologies to assist in decarbonisation efforts.
Mbeki suggested that Ramaphosa has been reduced to a “holding operation”, lacking the strength to enforce decisions, leading to a chaotic government.
