Cape Town — The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has revealed that an investigation is now underway into KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s alleged interference with a Correctional Services official.
In an X post, the South African Justice, Crime Prevention & Security revealed that Mkhwanazi is under investigation for an alleged incident that occurred in Richards Bay in 2023, and IPID has sworn to submit a sworn statement by Wednesday, 19 March 2025.
“It should be noted that the letter written to Lt – General Mkhwanazi, by IPID’s Acting Head of Investigations, that the Police Minister requested IPID to investigate the Provincial Commissioner, was erroneously written,” IPID spokesperson, Lizzy Shuping said.
Shuping added that that investigation comes following an anonymous complaint from the public, and IPID said it remains independent and impartial when it comes to investigations.
“The investigation is still in its infancy stages, and IPID will only engage on the matter once the investigation is concluded,” Shuping concluded.

Minister of Polcie Senzo Mchunu welcomed the investigation into General Mkhwanazi and noted the complaint filed against him.
“We welcome and fully endorse the statement issued by IPID on this matter. I do now want to repeat that I have not laid any complaint against General Mkhwanazi,: Mchunu said in a statement.
The Minister added that efforts will be intensified to ensure effective and efficient law enforcement throughout the country, and he recognised the work done by General Mkhwanazi in KZN.
