Cape Town — A social media influencer appeared in court during the Joshlin Smith trial on Wednesday and recalled her first encounter with Kelly Smith and her strange behaviour after her child disappeared.
The trial is currently on the 9th day as Kelly Smith, her boyfriend Jacquin “Boeta” Appollis and Steven van Rhyn appeared in the Saldanha Bay court.
The latest witness was social media influencer Shakeerah Ganief, who detailed the disturbing behaviour by Kelly in the aftermath of Joshlin’s disappearance.
Ganief explained that she received a call from Kelly and said she acted strangely during the call, saying she was vague and did not seem sad about losing her child.
She said Kelly became abrupt during the call, and when she had questioned the mother, she became defensive.
“I posed a question to her, and I asked her’ where was Joshlin and with who was Joshlin?’ She then said, ‘Boeta. I then asked her whether Boeta had done anything to the child. She immediately became very defensive, aggressive, abrupt and rude,” Ganief said.
She used an example of how fathers, grandfathers and brothers can harm young children, and Kelly responded harshly.

“She said I (Ganief) didn’t know Boeta. She told me she was the ‘evil one’ between the two of them and that whenever she wanted to hit the children, Boeta would stop her. At that point, I still didn’t understand what was going on because Kelly was very aggressive the moment I asked about Joshlin or said Boeta’s name,” she added.
Ganief also recalled noticing something unusual about Kelly’s hands as if she was digging in dirt.
“Given the fact that she said she came from work, and domestic workers’ hands are always clean,” she said.
“Right around her fingertips and her hand, it was black, as if she was digging in dirt,” she added.”
Ganief said the call ended, and she informed Kelly she would be coming to Saldanha Bay to come help with the search, and Kelly didn’t seem too impressed by it.
