Cape Town – Authorities are investigating a fatal bus crash on the N2 between Richards Bay and Shaka’s Kraal that killed at least nine church members, including a child.
The 82-seater bus reportedly suffered a tyre failure, causing it to veer off the road, break through a barrier, and overturn down an embankment.
Emergency teams confirmed that four people sustained serious injuries, 35 had minor injuries, and 12 were unharmed.
“The crash involved a passenger bus from Pontys Transport – Tongaat. Preliminary reports suggest that the crash happened due to a tyre failure, causing the driver to lose control. The bus subsequently went through a crash barrier, plunged down an embankment, and overturned,” The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane said.
RTMC and police are probing the incident, while KZN’s Transport MEC expressed condolences to the victims’ families and praised rescue efforts.
