Cape Town – DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille has bid an emotional farewell to her Opel Corsa, which she drove for 25 years.
In a post on X, Zille shared a photo of herself with the car, expressing sadness over parting with a vehicle that had served her and her family well.
The Corsa notably saved her life during a 2003 hijacking attempt in Khayelitsha when a bullet was cushioned by the car’s seat springs.
“Although I’m smiling, I had a tear in my eye when I finally said farewell to my Corsa that served me and my family well for 25 years. That car saved my life when I was shot during an attack while organizing for the DA in Khayelitsha. We went everywhere together,” she wrote.

Zille revealed she is now switching to a Toyota Yaris, earning praise for her modest choice.
