Johannesburg — The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) issued a public alert to encourage people to report alleged corrupt behaviour by officers.
In a statement, the JMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit is investigating cases where officers were suspected to have solicited bribes from the public and transferred the funds via e-wallet to a “ghost” phone number.
The department said it took the allegations seriously and was committed to upholding the highest standard of integrity and professionalism, and it urged the public to be vigilant of such practices.
“The JMPD will not tolerate any form of corruption within its ranks. These alleged actions are a betrayal of public trust and undermine the department’s commitment to serving the community with integrity,” JMPD Police Chief Patrick Jaca said.

“I want to send a clear message to all officers: if you are found engaging in these corrupt activities, the strictest disciplinary action will be taken, including criminal prosecution,” Jaca added.
He warned motorists that attempting to offer a bribe to a police officer was a serious offence, and anyone who did so would be arrested and face the consequences of the law.
“I urge all citizens to report any instances of corruption so that we can work together to maintain a clean and trustworthy police service,” he said.
The public were urged to contact the JMPD Anti-Fraud and Corruption hotline (080 020 3712). Otherwise they could message on WhatsApp (063 253 1928) or contact Chief Patrick Jaca at 082 559 3880.
The department is dedicated to ensuring transparency and accountability within its ranks. We appreciate the public’s cooperation in helping us combat corruption and maintain the integrity of our staff.
