Cape Town — The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has condemned a video trending on social media showing a pupil at Itirele Zenzele Comprehensive High School caught in possession of dagga and a knife.
The Department said the incident occurred during a routine school safety check conducted by patrollers and security. In the video, one of the security personnel is attempting to take a backpack from the pupil, who is not letting go of the bag. In one incident, as security tries to walk away, the pupil pulls him back and confronts him.

According to The Citizen, Gauteng Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said the security staff were conducting random body searches to prevent any illegal substances and weapons from entering the school grounds. Mabona said the pupils who arrived late were locked outside the school gate.
“Information at our disposal reveals that the learner refused to cooperate and forced his way into the school and ran straight to the classrooms. Accordingly, the security personnel followed and apprehended him,” Mabona said.
Mabona confirmed that the pupil had been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing, and a psycho-social team was called to the school to assist affected learners and staff.
Mabona urged schools to enforce their codes of conduct and called on parents to play an active role in instilling discipline inside and outside school premises.
“We strongly condemn any acts of misconduct, which seek to undermine the dignity of our learning institutions,” Mabona said.
