Cape Town — Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across Gauteng as Metrorail confirmed its services were affected due to the adverse weather.
Metrorail informed customers that its services throughout Gauteng were experincing disruptions due to the heavy rains and flooding that impacted operational railway tunnels, The Citizen reported.
The heavy rain led to flood at the Silverton and Belle Ombre stations, as well as flood on the Leralla Station that affected train entry. The following stations were also flooded:
- Between Industria and Westbury (Johannesburg – Randfontein)
- Kliptown and Tshiawelo (Midway – Johannesburg)
- Merafe – Dube (Naledi – Johannesburg)
- Grosvenor – Mayfair (Naledi/Midway/Randfontein – Johannesburg)
- Johannesburg – George Goch (Germiston – Johannesburg)
According to TimesLIVE, Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (PRASA) spokesperson, Lilian Mofokeng, said waterlogged Perway infrastructure meant certain networks were temporarily suspended, forcing a speed restriction of 15km.h, while a sinkhole at Pinedene and Braamfontein Yard stoped train operations.
Mofokeng said there were further disrutpions between Pinedene and Irene, level crossing flooding at Pienaarspoort Station and flooding at Wolmerton Depot.
Metrorail said Response and Mitigation Measures technical teams have been deployed to assess the damages, pump out excess water, and perform emergency repairs where necessary and additional safety protocols were implemented to ensure commuter safety.
“Their primary goal is to minimise disruptions and ensure the quickest possible recovery of affected services,” she said.
PRASA has advised commuters to plan for possible delays.
