Cape Town — The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) confirmed that an officer was gunned down outside a spaza shop in KwaThema on Friday.
In a statement, the department said the officer was attacked by two assailants outside the spaza shop around 8 in the morning. The men ambushed the officer and stole his firearm. This shooting follows the killing of an EMPD Traffic Warden in Thembisa on 29 January.
“We strongly condemn these senseless killings of officers. These are men and women that have taken it upon themselves to serve and protect our people and their property, yet they seem to become targets for criminals,” the EMPD said.
Johannesburg MMC for Community Safety, Alderman Sizakele Masuku was devastated to hear about the killing and spealed to the public to cooperate and share information to help resolve the police with solving crimes.
“We sincerely hope that arrests are made speedily so that those behind these incidents can face the full might of the law,” Masuku said.
Police are following certain leads, but no one has been arrested yet.
