Cape Town — An 18-year-old boy made an appearance in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after he allegedly killed his three-year-old brother with rat poison.
The boy from Orange Farm in Johannesburg is accused of killing his youngest brother with rat poison in an incident that occurred on 31 January 2025. The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Lumka Mahanjana detailed what happened that day, TimesLIVE reported.
The child’s mother was home with the accused and her two other sons, aged 16 and 22, when she noticed her youngest son was missing.
“Assuming he was playing at a neighbour’s house, she did not raise an alarm. However, by 1pm, when the child had not returned, she started searching for him,” Mahanjana said.
According to IOL, The 16-year-old brother when to a veld near the N1 highway to feed his goats when he saw the accused placing the child’s body in a dustbin. He confronted his brother and took the dustbin home to their mother.
“Emergency services were called and the child was declared dead at the scene,” Mahanjana added.
The 18-year-old turned himself into the police and confessed to killing his brother will rat poison.
