Johannesburg — The Gauteng Department of Education sent its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the Grade 12 learner, Retshegofetse Sennelo, who tragically passed away during a cricket match.
In a statement, the Department said the incident occurred during a 1st XI match between Krugersdorp High School (KHS) and Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) Boksburg on Saturday 1 February.
“While fielding, two Krugersdorp High School players collided as they attempted to intercept a ball struck into the outfield. One of the learners lost consciousness, while the second was experiencing difficulty breathing,” Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona said.
Emergency personnel who were on duty at the field attended to Sennelo, who later lost consciousness. He was taken to the Sunward Park Netcare Hospital but suffered cardiac arrest en route and was declared dead at the hospital.
The Department issued a Psycho-Support team to the field to provide counselling to the learners and teachers and said it would discuss with schools to ensure greater safety protocols during live sporting games.
Gauteng MEC, Matome Chiloane, sent condolences to the friends and family and students at the school for their devastating loss.
“We are devastated by the tragic passing of this young sportsman. Losing a learner in such circumstances is deeply painful, and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire school community. We call for strength and comfort for all those affected during this difficult time,” Chiloane said.
