Cape Town – The families of two South Africans, Frik Potgieter and Peter Huxham, who have been detained in Equatorial Guinea since 9 February 2023, have expressed their appreciation following Minister Ronald Lamola’s recent diplomatic visit to the country.
Minister Lamola, serving as a special envoy for President Cyril Ramaphosa, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Francophone Affairs, Simeón Oyono Esono Angue, in an effort to resolve the ongoing detention of Potgieter and Huxham.
In a statement after the visit, Lamola confirmed that he raised the urgent need for a resolution regarding the detention of the two engineers, whose prolonged imprisonment has caused significant distress for their families.
The two men, both experienced professionals in Equatorial Guinea’s oil and gas sector, have been held under unclear circumstances.

Shaun Murphy and Francois Nigrini, spokespersons for the Potgieter and Huxham families, conveyed a renewed sense of hope following Lamola’s diplomatic intervention.
“This visit brings a glimmer of hope to our families, who have endured the prolonged and unjust detention of Frik and Peter for far too long.
“These two engineers have dedicated years to Equatorial Guinea’s oil and gas sector, mentoring local workers and contributing to the nation’s growth,” they said in a statement on Tuesday.
The families urged continued diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Potgieter and Huxham, saying that the men’s ongoing detention has caused severe emotional strain for them and their loved ones.

“This ordeal has robbed them of nearly two years, time that they can never recover,” the families said.
“We implore the government to persist in its efforts to bring Frik and Peter home.”
In a bid to amplify the plight of the two men, the families launched an online petition, website, and social media profiles in June 2024. Their online campaign has garnered significant support, with over 11 000 signatures on the petition and growing awareness on platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn.
The families stressed the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement.
“Through continued dialogue and action, we believe a resolution can be achieved that upholds justice and human rights,” they said.
