Cape Town – The ANC plans to reconfigure its provincial executive committees (PECs) in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to strengthen leadership, but this will not affect government operations, according to Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula.
The ANC’s poor performance in the 2024 general elections resulted in the party losing its majority in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
Following this, the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) held a two-day meeting to decide whether to disband or reconfigure the leadership in these provinces.
During a media briefing on Monday, Mbalula confirmed that national officials will present a proposal for the reconfiguration within a week, ensuring it does not interfere with government work.
“Reconfiguration means we are going to tamper with the leadership of the ANC. It’s very clear,” Mbalula said.
He added: “The national officials must bring a proposal on the reconfiguration of the leadership of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to the National Working Committee within a week.
“Whatever action is taken should not interfere in the work of government in the two provinces.”
Mbalula said that government functions, including Panyaza Lesufi’s position as Gauteng Premier, will remain unchanged, with only the ANC leadership being reconfigured.
He acknowledged that both Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal are crucial provinces for the ANC, but the party’s state in these regions, particularly KwaZulu-Natal, is dire.
He described the situation in KZN as “decimated” and stressed the need for action to prevent further decline.
