Cape Town — The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) questioned the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team that looked into the killings of politicians in the province.
The political task team was established in 2019 to address the high rate of political killings that had begun in the province. The political killings task team was established after a recommendation by the Moerane Commission to investigate the killings, EWN reported.
However, Police Minister Sezno Mchunu announced last week that the task team would be disbanded. The DA in KZN believes that it was not a good move, given the current political landscape in the province.
The DA suggested that, with the upcoming 2026 municipal polls, the Minister must have an alternate plan in place.

According to East Coast Radio, the DA’s Francois Rodgers, said Mchunu must say what plans he is putting in place as the municipal elections approach.
“The political landscape in our province has changed entirely. Are we 100% sure that it’s going to be free and fair elections? Or are we going to have challenges?” Rodgers asked.
The provincial DA’s comments come amid the ongoing murder case of Umgeni’s former Chief Whip Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, who was gunned down at his home in Mpophomeni in December 2024.
Rodgers said the political killings task team did not help find the cause behind Ndlovu’s death.
“Then you have to ask yourself, why are they dissolving it? Is it because it was ineffective, because, in our opinion, it was fairly ineffective? If we look at the case of Nhlalayenza, and the lack of interest in working together with stakeholders, including the family, you must ask yourself, what is going on?” he said.
Bail application by one of the suspects in the late DA uMngeni Chief Whip, Nhlalayenza Ndlovu has been denied, both suspects have been remanded in custody until 11 March 2025.
